Sintering machine for making stone cutting tools
ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP AT
This machine can produce various types of diamond tools which are used for cutting stones such as marble, granite, kota, concrete, glass, ceramics, etc. The cutting tools are made up of various metal powders (such as cobalt, iron, copper, bronze, tin, tungsten metal and tungsten carbide powders) and synthetic industrial diamonds.
This machine consists of four/five major parts namely:
1. Machine base fabrication
2. Press structure
3. Heating transformer
4. Hydraulic power pack
5. Electrical control panel

- Machine base fabrication provides a foundation on which the parts of the sintering machine rest.
- Press structure is the basic hydraulic press which presses the component with hydraulic power.
This press structure consists of:
- Two fixed platens
- Two movable platens
- Four guide rods with gun metal bushes
- Clamping nuts
- Two hydraulic cylinders
- Hydraulic power pack serves the function of converting the hydraulic power into mechanical energy
in order to compress the component into its desired form.
It consists of:
1. Hydraulic pump
2. Coupling
3. Electric motor
4. Manifold
5. Hydraulic valves like direction control valve, pressure proportional valve, etc.
6. Suction & return line filters
7. Oil heat exchangers for cooling
- The electrical control panel controls all the movements, pressure, temperature & it also monitors the
entire sintering process. All signals go from the panel to the other components of the machine.
Electrical control panel consists of components such as:
1. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
2. Colour display monitor
3. PID temperature controller, thyristor control card, Thermocouple
4. Amplifier card for pressure proportional valve
5. Various starters for motors
6. Various control switches
- Heating transformer is basically a resistance heating transformer mounted on the back of the base and its function is to convert high 440V to 4V and give very high current for heating the moulds by short circuiting the secondary side of the transformer.
